Back to School Night Success

9/22/2012

Picture
Last Thursday evening was Back to School Night at JWMS, and we experienced an excellent turn-out as evidenced by our packed parking lot!  Thank you, parents and students, for taking an active interest in our school community.  Teachers worked hard to prepare presentations, parents asked insightful questions, and students had a chance to show off their school.  Parents, your next opportunity to connect with teachers face-to-face will be at our fall Conferences on October 24th and 25th. If you have questions or concerns before then, please feel free to use our Teacher Finder to locate contact information for your student's teachers.  We know this year will be a success and we are committed to providing quality education for your child.  Thank you for your involvement!

Parents, students, and teachers will connect at James Workman's Back to School Night on Thursday, September 20th.  The event begins at 6:30pm and lasts until 8:30pm.  Parents are highly encouraged to bring their students and attend.  Be in your student's first period classroom at 6:30pm sharp, then follow the evening's bell schedule to progress through your student's typical day at JWMS.  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet teachers and begin a partnership for student success.

End of Year Activity Requirements

8/24/2012

James Workman has developed an official policy regarding student participation in special activities at the end of the academic year.  Traditionally, JWMS has held grade level BBQ's and other special events to honor students' hard work.  Students need to start the 2011-2012 school year with the end in mind; the criteria that will be used to determine participation eligibility in end of the year activities can be found below:

Criteria for Participation in End of Year Activities

In an effort to help middle school students be more successful in middle school, to help them
develop and maintain good study habits and focus, and to provide a more structured transition
from elementary school to high school, the criteria for participation in end-of-year activities are
listed below:
-Maintain a minimum of a 1.75 cumulative GPA
-Receive no more than 10 days of ISS/OSS combined
-Receive no referral resulting in ISS/OSS within 30 days of the event (exclusion list)
-GPA is determined by averaging Trimester 1, Trimester 2 and Hexmester 5 (Progress Report) grades together. All subject areas will calculate into GPA.
-End-of-year activities include (but are not limited to):

-Grade Level BBQ
-Grade Level Trip
-Promotion (8th Grade)
-Other activities not listed here

Be Fire Smart and Help Cathedral City Fire Department Earn $$$

Be Fire Smart and Help Cathedral City Fire Department Earn $$$
Picture
Cathedral City Fire Department needs the help of James Workman students, staff, and parents.  They are currently working to win a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual.  In order to win, they need to engage the community in fire safety and prevention.  All that the parents, students, and staff of James Workman have to do to help is log on to the website www.befiresmart.com, answer 10 fire safety questions, enter and verify an email address, and select the Cathedral City Fire Department as the agency to receive credit for their visit.  Once an individual completes this process, a counter will appear on the website showing the number of times the city has been credited in total.  If CCFD gains enough credits for the population they serve, they will win their $10,000 grant!
